Recently, I asked a forum of future brides “what concerns you about your makeup and hair on your wedding day?” The reason for asking is because, I want know what you are nervous about. This way, I can do a deep dive in addressing some of beauty and wedding related issues! Hair extensions, and whether they are needed for your wedding day, was a question widely asked. We get it! It’s a hot topic, because wedding day hair extensions are a necessity. The secret is out! A lot of those insanely voluminous styles you’ve been dreamin’ about from Pinterest are done using hair extensions.
For a first time buyer, extensions are quite expensive and risky to purchase. This is especially the case if you’re going the online route. Between choosing European versus Indian, matching the specific colour tone to your hair, and determining the proper length, it’s important to get the whole hair extensions thing right.
My first tip is to look into clip in extensions. After working in the industry for several years, this is my advice to you: unless you plan on wearing wedding day hair extensions after your special day, I would not recommend to invest in your own pair. This is because of cost. It will run you 100-400$, depending on quality for one set of extensions. Also, you have to ask yourself, “will you ever use them again to style your own hair?” Quite a few women don’t see themselves reaching for the set for future date nights, or parties, so why have them around?! Instead, what I would recommend is to rent a pair, or get them semi-permanent installed into your hair.
The choice between the two is greatly dependant on the hair style you’re going for. Planning on wearing your hair up or half-up half-down? Find a bridal hairstylist for your wedding day that has a kit full of various extensions you can rent. (We, as a team, use the Emme Hair brand!) During your Bridal Preview, you can work out the details. Collaborate with your stylist to choose the colour and density that will give you your desired results. Reminder to return them on time to your stylist. If arrived late, you may be charge a fee, or the full amount, for breaking your contract! This is because team likely needs to prep your set for future clients.
My second tip is to look into semi-permanent extensions. If you have a bigger budget, or are looking to wear your hair all down on your wedding day, these types of extensions can work great. I would recommend for you to go to a professional salon and get a consultation. There are several different types of permanent extensions on the market, therefore, it’s important to be informed on their unique qualities. Different qualities may be in terms of styling capabilities, thickness, length, and longevity.
To be specific, some permanent hair extensions don’t allow you to manipulate your hair into complex up-styles and braids. In this case, these types of wedding day hair extensions may not be the best option for you, or you may just need to be intentional about the bead/weft placement. Nevertheless, semi-permanent hair extensions are undeniably luxe! Not only do you get to enjoy luscious locks on your wedding day, but also for the events leading up and your honeymoon after.
Going to check out a salon for wedding day hair extensions? We recommend all our clients to our fav local shop, Emme Hair. They have two locations, one in Kistilano and one in Langley. Veronica, the owner, and her stylists will do a fantastic job. Their stylists are highly skilled at applying, custom colouring and blending your extensions with your natural hair. The end result is beyond natural! This salon specializes in hair extensions and manufacture’s their own brand of ethically sourced hair.
At the salon, you can get multiple different types of extensions. For example, wefts, tapes, clips, as well as Emme strands (which are micro bead extensions, only they use smaller beads.) With many different types of permanent extensions, there are important factors to take into consideration. You need to find what is right for your hair. Make sure you talk to a professional about your natural hair qualities (is it coarse, or fine?) and your desired outcome. They will need to have an idea of your bridal hair style to suggest the best type of wedding day hair extensions. Beauty En Route was honoured to be the makeup team for Emme’s website campaign. We have seen first hand their skills and you can check their teams availability here. Each of the salons clients also get to enjoy a glass of bubbly while being pampered! How fun?!
